Polydown® and Polydown-DK® -
Utilizing siliconized (slick) fibers and the latest resin bonded techniques, Hobbs makes the ultimate polyester quilt batting. Both battings are resin bonded to resist fiber migration are non-allergenic, washable and can be quilted up to 4-6” apart. Hand quilters will especially appreciate quilting the soft, silky fibers. Polydown DK® is designed for use with darker fabrics.

Heirloom® Premium and Heirloom® Bleached Cottons –
Heirloom® premium cotton blend is 80% unbleached cotton & 20% polyester, is lightly needle punched and lightly resin bonded. Heirloom® bleached is 100% bleached needle punched cotton. Both can be quilted by hand or machine up to 4” apart. Products are washable with shrinkage of 3-5%.

Heirloom® Natural & Heirloom® Natural with Scrim -
Made using 100% natural cotton for both hand and machine quilting. Heirloom® Natural can be quilted up to 4” apart. The Heirloom® Natural with scrim is made for machine quilters and craft projects with quilt spacing up to 10” apart. Both battings are extremely clean with normal shrinkage of 3-5% comparable to other cotton battings.

Heirloom® Washable Wool-
Hobbs has combined a unique resin bonding process with magnificent washable wool to make what we believe to be the finest wool batting in the world. Wool breathes better than other fibers and acts like a natural insulator helping to maintain comfort in summer or winter. Wool is exceptionally easy to quilt by hand or machine with quilt spacing up to 4” apart.

Thermore® Ultra Thin Batting-
This unique and patented product was developed as a thin, drapable, migration free polyester batt. Thermore® is now considered the premium polyester batting for apparel, miniatures and other projects requiring a thin, non-bearding batting. Thermore® can be quilted up to 6-8” apart and is wonderful to quilt by hand or machine.

Cloud Lite® and Cloud Loft®-
Hobbs unique resin bonding technique produces an unusually uniform resin bonded polyester batting that minimizes fiber migration. Cloud Lite® is low loft – approximately 3/8” thick with Cloud loft® being high loft at about 5/8” thick. Both products are non-allergenic, washable, and can be quilted by hand or machine up to 4-6” apart.

Polydown® Pillow Inserts-
Polydown® Pillow Inserts were the first inserts on the market filled with siliconized (slick) fibers. Polydown® inserts feel like down, yet have the resiliency and washability unique to polyester. Polydown® Pillow Inserts are available in polypropylene and polished cotton covers in a wide variety of sizes.

Tuscany Collection

The Ultimate Quilt Batting

Whether you are a consumer or you are a shop owner, you should be interested in the new Tuscany Collection of fine battings made especially for shops and their discriminating clientele.

Tuscany Silk bonded batting is made from imported silk filaments with the addition of 10% polyester. It is then carded and resin bonded to help retard bearding (fiber migration) and allowing the batting to be handled like a blanket. It can be quilted up to 4" apart and hand washed in tepid water and lay out to dry flat. It will likely shrink approximately 5%. Because of silk's natural ability to breath, it is an excellent choice for airy, light weight quilts and coverlets. The Tuscany Silk batting quilts magnificently by hand or machine and is a superb filling material for embroidery.

Tuscany Wool batting is made with the very best super wash wool, which eliminates most or all of the shrinkage. It is then carded and resin bonded to help retard bearding. Tuscany wool batting provides superb insulation and the fiber breathes allowing excess heat to dispense away from the body. It can be quilted up to 4" apart and is washable. We recommend washing in tepid water by hand and laying out flat to dry. It hand quilts like a dream, and is wonderful for machine quilters as well.

Tuscany Polyester made with the finest siliconized, very small denier polyester, and then resin bonded to resist bearding. We then use a unique technique that helps seal the outside and further prevent bearding. It is completely washable and may be quilted up to 4" apart. It should not shrink.

Tuscany Bleached Cotton is made with fine 100% USA cotton. It's carded, and specially needle punched to prevent bunching/shifting and is completely washable. It will shrink 3-5% like all needle punched 100% cotton batting. It can be quilted up to 4" apart. Bleached cotton should be used with light or white fabrics to eliminate the shading of darker battings.

Tuscany Unbleached Cotton starts with fine 100% USA cotton is carded and specially needle punched to prevent bunching and shifting. It is completely washable and will shrink 3-5% like all cotton batting. It can be quilted up to 4" apart and should be used primarily with medium or dark colored fabrics.

How To Buy Wholesale From Hobbs

To buy wholesale from Hobbs you need a resale number. If you have a resale number you qualify. We have a four carton/roll minimum and we often have requests to reduce that minimum. If we reduced our minimum we would have to raise our prices. If you need less than four cartons/rolls you can buy from any one of probably 20 distributors.

General Information... Batting

In general, batting is made using various processes. The process by which battings are manufactured and produced gives a product its identity. There are (5) primary processes by which battings are made:

Garnetted or Plain: Garnetted batting is processed through garnett or carding equipment and layered with no other added processes. This plain batting is not bound together in any manner and is very easy to quilt. The major issue with this type of batting is potential for migration and shifting. This type of batting will tend to bunch and shift between the quilt lines if not quilted as close as ¼” –1/2” spacing

Needle punched: This type of batting is carded or garnetted then layer to form a web. The web is then passed through needling equipment that mechanically entangles the web by using thousands of needles that lock the fiber together. This type of product works to give strength to a product while allowing for a soft hand and thinner profile vs. a high loft type product. Needle punched wool or polyester tend to migrate, but will not bunch or shift like plain garnetted or carded products. Needle punched products can be thermal bonded or resin bonded.

Thermal bonded, Heat sealed, Glazine finish: All of these types of batting are similar in that they typically use some type of low melt binder fiber in the mix. Low melt binder fiber is a polyester fiber that is designed to melt at a lower temperature than a standard polyester fiber. Thermal bonded products have low melt fiber blended with standard polyester. The blended web is passed through an oven and the low melt fibers “flow” and bonds to the surrounding polyester fibers. Problems with Thermal bonded products are that the surface fibers are not tied down which allows for migration. In addition, thermal bonded products do not dry clean and break down faster with washing than do resin bonded products.

In the case of glazine or heat sealed type products, a web is passed through a mechanical process that applies heat to the surface of the web. The surface of the web is “sealed” or “glazed”. This sealing or tying of the fibers on the top and bottom helps minimize the potential for bearding, bunching and shifting allowing for the batt to open like a blanket and have good stability.

Resin bonded: Resin bonded batting is made made from a wide variety of fibers including polyester, cotton, wool etc.. A web is garnetted or carded then passed through a process that applies a resin to both sides. The web is dried and cured to form a bonded batting. This bonded batting resists bearding better than any other type of batting. There are many different types of fiber and resin combinations to give a desired “look” and “hand”. Combining processes, fibers and resins makes the resin bonded process the most versatile and most effective way to produce battings.
